HCHS claims district’s top seeds

The 52nd District draw was kind to Harlan County on Saturday. Both the Black Bears and Lady Bears received the top seed in the upcoming tournaments at Harlan High School.

Harlan County (20-6) won a toss with Bell County to earn the top seed on the boys side. The Bears will face Harlan (9-16) on the opening night of tournament play on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.. The Green Dragons tied for the third seed with Middlesboro, but lost their coin toss. Harlan County defeated Harlan 75-55 on the road and 73-40 at home.

Bell County (12-12) will face Middlesboro (14-10) on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats knocked off Middlesboro in both meetings during the regular season, including 59-58 win at home.

The boys championship is scheduled Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.

The Lady Bears also won a toss with Bell County to take the top spot in the girls tournament. Harlan County (22-5) will face fourth-seeded Middlesboro (3-19) Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. The Lady Bears cruised to a 51-32 win at Middlesboro, but held off an upset bid from the Lady Jackets 51-50 at home.

Harlan (12-13) will meet Bell County (22-4) on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Cats defeated Harlan 63-54 at home and 57-37 on the road.

The girls championship game is set for Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
