The posting of 911 numbers on homes throughout the county was a topic of discussion during a recent meeting of the Harlan Fiscal Court. Magistrate David Kennedy said he is getting numerous reports the numbers are not being posted to assist emergency personnel.
“The court has brought this up several times and the ambulance people can’t find these people when they call,” said Kennedy. “We voted to have people post these numbers on their homes. Marvin (Lipfird), do you think your sheriff’s department could start going from house to house. We’ve brought this up numerous times and it has been put in the paper, but people are still not doing this. Could you and David McGill come up with a plan to solve this?”
Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill said he will send out a mass message on the county’s CodeRED system telling residents they must post their 911 numbers on their homes. He said the numbers must be at least three inches tall and legible on their homes.
McGill said this is a county ordinance and “must be done.”
