Daniel (Danny) Eugene McGlothin, 68, Jacksonville, FL passed away suddenly on November 30, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville. He was very loved and respected by all his family members and he in return respected all of his immediate family, extended family, in-laws, friends, and co-workers. He was always willing to do whatever was necessary to help out in fixing problems in a dedicated and caring manner. He was born in Harlan, KY, was a graduate of Loyall High School, KY, and attended the University of Kentucky.

Danny served in the U.S. Army for 6 years with 2 tours of duty in Korea where he was an AUTODIN Systems Programmer and Communications Center Specialist. He was also stationed at Fort Detrick MD, home of the U.S Army’s East Coast Relay Station Center which was the largest communications center in the world. Later, as a Civilian at the U.S. Army Computer Systems Command in Washington, D.C. he was a Computer Specialist and Software Engineer and debugged applications software, developed systems software, and worked as a Trouble Shooter for the many U.S. Army Personnel, Logistic and Finance Management Systems. His overall dedication and resourcefulness contributed greatly to the success of SIDPERS and reflected highly on his Federal Civil Service career. Danny believed in “Duty, Honor, Country”, and when given his orders, did his duty and significantly changed the United States Army’s Personnel Management Effectiveness.

He also served at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Reston, VA. He debugged systems and applications software, developed systems software, installed and managed DOI’s large mainframe Computers Systems Networks. He was USGS Database Manager and concerning Harlan and Kentucky Coal, he helped to design the DOI‘s National Coal Database.

At Central Kentucky Area Vocational School in Lexington, KY, he was a State Certified School Teacher and taught Business & Office Data Processing.

He was a member of the Jockey Club, an owner of race horses, and enjoyed his hobby of thoroughbred horse racing. He had always hoped to make it to the Kentucky Derby with one of his race horses but this wish went unfulfilled. But he enjoyed the thrill of victory when his horses won and the horse racing lifestyle.

In 1993, he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by his Wife, Farah McGlothin; Son, James (Jimi) Stayton McGlothin and wife Mary Kate; Grandchildren: Jamie and Maya McGlothin and Zachary Reynolds; Brothers and Sister and their Spouses: Bobby Lee and Kaye McGlothin, Williston, FL; Johnny McGlothin and former wife Carol, Louisville, KY; Clay and Evelyn McGlothin, Louisville, KY; Austin Lynn and Janet McGlothin, Madison, IN; Jerry and Tammy McGlothin, Woodlawn, TN; Diane and Donald Everett, Jensen Beach, FL; and many Cousins, Nephews and Nieces, and Great-Nephews and Great-Nieces.

He will be missed by his very close friends who were like brothers to him, Doug Hendrickson of Oak Ridge, TN and his Mother Hazel Green; Donald Hogans, Herndon, VA; and Jack Talbot, Jacksonville, FL; and many other friends and family who were important to him and were part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his Son , Daniel Eugene McGlothin, Jr; Infant Grandson, Daniel Weston-Cole McGlothin; Father, Herbert L. McGlothin; Mother, Madella Witt McGlothin; and Nephew Jeff McGlothin.

Danny’s presence will be sorely missed by all of us. But the world is a much better place because of the story he wrote in his Book of Life. We are comforted by knowing he went home to be with our true Father in Heaven. Our loss is God’s gain.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec 8th, at 11:00 AM at Sharp Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Hux officiating. Burial will follow at Davis Cemetery in Coalfield, Tenn.
