Harlan County held off Pineville in a matchup of 13th Region contenders in a Southeastern Kentucky Conference Panorama on Monday. Nine players reached the scoring column for the Black Bears as they knocked off Pineville 65-53.

“People don’t realize it, but Pineville is one of the better teams in the region. They execute well and shoot the ball. Our kids were aware of that,” said Harlan County coach Mike Jones.

With most of the attention on the Harlan County seniors, sophomore Tyler Miller played like one of the top post players in the region. Miller led all scorers with 19 points and dominated the glass.

“He went hard tonight. That is what we have to have, and it has to be every game,” Jones said.

Harlan County was impressive in the first and third quarters, outscoring the visiting Mountain Lions 36-23 in the two periods.

“We had spurts where we played pretty well, then we had too many lulls. We are just glad that we have another couple of weeks before we open up. When you scrimmage you try to see some things that you need to work on,” Jones said. “We found out a lot about our team in the last two scrimmages. It will give us a good chance to come to practice and clear some of that stuff up.”

Harlan County opens the regular season Dec. 1 at home against Sullivan Central, Tenn. Pineville will host Jackson County on Nov. 27.
