John was one of eleven children born to the late John and Margaret Simpson Smith. He was a lifetime resident of Harlan County working in the mining, logging, saw mills and was self-employed in his heavy equipment business. John is a veteran on WW II serving in the US Army Air Corps as a munitions expert. He was part of the invasion of Normandy Beach and the Rhineland.
He attended Elcomb Baptist Church and was also a Kentucky Colonel.
John loved Harlan County and the work he did here. The beauty of the county was something that captured his heart. His family was the passion of his life; the center of his world.
Also preceding him in death was his wife, Mildred Hubbard Smith; his son, John Smith; five brothers, Byrd Smith, Henry Smith, Melvin Smith, Clyde Smith and Willard Smith. Four sisters, Carrie Moses, Laura Noe, Hazel Works, Verlin Farmer Caldwell and his son-in-law, Charles Foley.
He is survived by one daughter, Julia Foley of Harlan, his grandson, Stephen and wife, Christie Foley; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Andrew, Kaylee and Connor all of London, KY. One sister, Darlene Carter of Bulls Gap, TN; his sister-in-law, Ottie Rose and husband, Jack Messmann of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; two brothers-in-law, George Hubbard of Fairborn, Ohio and John Curry of Churubusco, Indiana. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be in the Chapel of Rich Funeral Home Thursday evening at 7PM with Rev. Joshua Hensley officiating. Burial will follow Friday morning at 11AM Resthaven Cemetery with Military Honors by the Harlan Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4PM until the funeral hour.
