The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has approved the reconstruction of KY 1926 into Kingdom Come State Park at Cumberland. Construction is expected to begin by spring of 2014.
During a meeting of the Cumberland Tourist and Convention Commission on Tuesday, a letter from Joseph E. Mosley, an engineering official with the Kentucky TEBM Project Development District 11 in Manchester, was presented to members for discussion.
“This project has been under development for several years and I am happy to report that the project has sufficient funds to complete the design, right of way and utility relocations and construction phases,” wrote Mosley in the letter. “The project is currently under final roadway design awaiting approval of the geotechnical investigation.”
Mosley wrote that the geotechnical report process has been lengthy “due to the multiple issues with constructing the proposed alignment on Pine Mountain.”
“We are scheduled to have right of way plans by spring of 2013 and it will require about 12 months to clear right of way and utilities,” said Mosley. “As of now, we are expecting to be ready for construction by the spring of 2014.”
Commission Director Tracey Bailey reported Mosley had asked her if there is a lot of support for this project in the Tri-City and Harlan County area.
“I know the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce and Harlan County Fiscal Court have written letters in support of this project,” said Bailey. “Dr. (Bruce) Ayers suggested other organizations and individuals show their support for this project by writing letters to Mosley. With the Trail Town designation coming and the horse trail connecting into the state park through the Little Shepherd Trail, it is detrimental to us by not having an good access road.”
