Staff Report

The Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a South Carolina man who was fatally injured in an off road crash Thursday evening at the Black Mountain ATV Park in Evarts.

According to Trooper Jason Joseph, Gabriel Nelson Gardner, 31, of Seneca, was operating an off road vehicle on one of the trails at the park. A mechanical failure caused the vehicle to leave the trail and go over an embankment, ejecting Gardner.

Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County Deputy Coroner Jim Rich.

Gardner’s wife, Heather Gardner, was a passenger in the vehicle and suffered minor injuries. She was transported and admitted to Harlan ARH Hospital where she was later released. The incident is still under investigation by Joseph.

The Harlan County Rescue Squad and LifeCare Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
