Lady Bears down Clay County

The Harlan County Lady Bears cruised to their second straight win with a 25-11, 25-12 victory over visiting Clay County in 13th Region action on Wednesday.

The Lady Bears never trailed on their way to a dominant win in the first set.

Cara Middleton had three service points and one kill to pace Harlan County. Whitney Stevens contributed three service points. Keisha Mimes recorded two kills and one service point. Chyanna Harris tallied two service points. Rebecca Eldridge had one kill and one service point, and Breanna Dunson added a service point.

The Lady Tigers stayed close for much of the second game, but Stevens put Harlan County in control with four straight service points, including two aces to push the Lady Bears’ lead to 19-0. Harlan County closed out the set on a 6-2 run.

“Whitney has been more consistent with her serves and her spikes this year,” said Harlan County coach Donna Vicini. “She just seems to have come out and bloomed.”

Stevens’ three aces and two service points led Harlan County in the final set. Eldridge contributed two aces and a service point. Mimes and Dunson each recorded a pair of service points. Middleton had a kill and a service point, while Harris added a service point.

Harlan County won 21-5, 21-13 in the junior varsity contest.

Candice Huff reeled off eight service points to pace the Lady Bears in the first set. Charleigh Mefford recorded five service points and a kill. Lauren Lee contributed two service points, a tip and an ace. Katelyn Reynolds added a kill.

Brittany Clem’s six service points and two aces led the way in the second and final set. Reynolds contributed a pair of service points. Lee and Mefford each recorded a point and a tip, and Huff added an ace and a service point.

Harlan County (8-5) will travel to Jenkins today, while Clay County (1-7) will visit Red Bird.
