Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said troopers arrived on the scene of the crash involving a pickup truck and garbage truck on U.S. 119.
Jacobs said it was discovered that a 2000 Chevrolet pickup operated by Ronnie Clark, 17, of Cumberland, was attempting to turn left from the Harlan County High School onto U.S. 119. At that time, the pickup made contact with a 1996 Chevrolet garbage truck traveling south on U.S. 119.
The driver of the garbage truck, Paul Smith, 53, of Lynch, was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt.
Clark was trapped inside the pickup and was removed by emergency personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt. AirEvac airlifted Clark from the scene to Holston Valley Medical Center, in Kingsport, Tenn.
Alcohol or drugs are not suspected. Blood was obtained from both drivers.
The crash remains under investigation by Trooper Rodney Sturgill.
