Lawrence H. Cornett, 80, Cumberland, died Oct. 5, 2004, at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

A native of Harlan County, he was a member of the Blair Pentecostal Church, United Mine Workers of America and Scotia Burial Fund.

He was a retired coal miner from U.S. Steel and Scotia with 43 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry B. and Mary Howard Cornett; and a son, Dale Cornett.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Cornett, Cumberland; seven children: David Cornett, Cumberland; Mildred Cornett Rowland, Cumberland; Darrell (Sonny) Cornett, Cumberland; Doyle (Pete) Cornett, Cumberland; Donnie Cornett, Cumberland; Delmas Cornett, Cumberland; and Marilyn Cornett Gaines, Cumberland; one brother, David Cornett, Arizona; three sisters: Juanita Fields, Cumberland; Viola Dixon, Hiram; and Wilma Creech, Peoria, Ill; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday in the chapel of Day & Jones Funeral.

Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at the chapel in the funeral home with the Rev. Doyle Carnes and the Rev. T. R. Stump officiating.

Burial will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Day & Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
