The host Lady Skins showed signs of life in the second half while the Trojanettes struggled, but Cawood's game-opening 12-0 run proved too much for Cumberland to overcome as the Trojanettes claimed a 59-44 win.
With the victory, Cawood clinched the top seed in the upcoming 52nd District tournament and locked the Lady Skins into the No. 2 slot.
"You can't start off 12-0 against a good ball team and expect to have a shot at winning down the stretch," Cumberland coach John Bond said. "We got down in a 12-0 hole right off the bat and expended all kinds of energy to get back in it. We just got down too deep."
Natasha Boggs came up big in two critical stretches for the Trojanettes. The senior guard scored seven points to fuel Cawood's game-opening spurt and also scored the team's final five points to seal the win.
"At the end of the game, we want Tasha to have the ball in her hands," Cawood coach Bucky Burkhart said. "She's seeing the floor a whole lot better. She's distributing it when they have to come off and help, and she's passing it to the right spot. She had a very good floor game tonight."
For the game, Boggs led all scorers with 26 points and also contributed three assists and an incredible nine steals.
"You've got to take care of the basketball when she's around. You can't just stick it out in front of your body like we were doing. You've got to know where she's at when you're dribbling," Bond said.
Boggs opened the scoring with two layups, including one off her first steal, as the Trojanettes raced to the early lead. Junior guard Whitney Rhymer added three points and senior forward Jeri Lynn Howard scored three as Cawood claimed a 12-0 lead.
A free throw by senior guard Megan Metcalfe finally put Cumberland on the board with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter. Boggs countered with a 3-pointer and another layup, bringing her first-quarter scoring total to 12 points.
Metcalfe drained a trey and senior forward Sheena Lee added two free throws to cut the Trojanettes' lead to 17-6 heading into the second quarter.
Freshman center Erika Letanosky got things going for the Lady Skins offensively in the second quarter, scoring five of the team's 12 points.
The Trojanettes spread the ball around a bit more in the period. Sophomore forward Sierra Wynn scored six points and Howard added four as Cawood took a 33-18 halftime lead.
Cawood dominated the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Lady Skins 28-19.
"We weren't aggressive at all in the first half. We didn't go to the boards and I don't know. I just can't explain it," Bond said.
A re-energized team of Lady Skins showed marked improvement in the third quarter. Cumberland forced five Cawood turnovers and outscored the Trojanettes 11-9. Letanosky scored four points in the period and Metcalfe added four.
Cumberland cut the lead to as little as nine midway through the fourth quarter on a layup by Lee. But Wynn drained a jumper and Boggs added the Trojanettes' final five points while the Lady Skins got just one basket from Letanosky over the final three minutes of the game.
The Lady Skins outrebounded Cawood 23-17 in the second half.
"It seemed like we just relaxed, and they picked up their intensity. We allowed them to get back in the ballgame. We just went flat; there's no other way around it," Burkhart said.
"But it was a big district win, and that was the main point."
Letanosky led the Lady Skins with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Metcalfe added 11 points.
Lee, who scored her 1,000th career point recently, shot just two-for-16 from the field and scored a season-low eight points. Bond said his standout forward is still suffering from an ankle injury she suffered during last Tuesday's loss to Barbourville.
"She's not moving, not jumping. It's just not her the last three games," he said.
Cumberland (11-9) will try to snap a four-game losing streak tonight at home against Knox Central. Cawood (12-7) will close out district play at Harlan on Thursday.
In previously unreported action, the Lady Skins claimed their first junior varsity win with a 30-15 victory over Barbourville.
Kelsey Day paced Cumberland with eight points, and Stephanie Whitt added six. Lyndsey Cornett scored five, Sasha Burton and Marisha Tinsley added four each and Brianna Cornett scored three.
Samantha Grubb led Barbourville with six points.
Cumberland (1-9) fell to host Franklin County 32-19 in junior varsity action Saturday.
Sasha Burton scored nine points for the Lady Skins. Stephanie Whitt scored eight and Ashley Rogers added two.
