Two former Cumberland High School cheerleaders are now professional dancers for the Lexington Horsemen, a National Indoor Football League team.

Mindi Huff, Class of 97, and Elaine Ison, Class of 98, who have been both best friends and cheerleaders since middle school, joined the Fillies in January.

"We saw the tryout signs posted up around Lexington and decided to go for it because it had been such a long time since we cheered. We were feeling out of shape, and we also wanted to make some friends around Lexington, since we were both new to the area," said Huff.

Huff and Ison each have extensive cheerleading careers that span through all of high school and partially through college at Eastern Kentucky University.

As members of the Fillies, Huff and Ison participate in a variety of charity and fundraising activities, as well as cheer in front of crowds of 10,000 or more on a weekly basis.

Both women admit, though, that they are surprised when strangers recognize them from their appearances.

As Huff recalls, "I was in Benham and a man came up and told me that he recognized me from a commercial (about the NIFL) and that he was proud that there was a professional cheerleader from Benham. He also asked for my autograph, but I didn't know if he was serious or not."

When they are not cheering, Huff is a teacher at Yates Elementary School in Lexington, while Ison owns and operates CEI Flooring, also in Lexington.

Huff is the daughter of Mitzi and Gary Huff, of Benham, and Ison is the daughter of George and Matilda Ison, of Lynch.
