Jared Sizemore hasn’t often had much room for error despite winning his first six decisions this season.
One mistake cost him his first loss of the season Tuesday at Knox Central as junior outfielder Jacob Nelson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to send the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Harlan County.
It was the first loss for Sizemore (6-1) since last year’s 13th Region Tournament. The junior lefthander gave up four hits while striking out 10 and walking two.
Peyton Payne allowed one run on seven hits in six innings, with six strikeouts and two walks. Nelson earned the save as he allowed one hit in one inning.
Sizemore and Devon Rodrigues had two hits each to lead the 13-14 Bears. Sean Johnson, Caleb Carmical and Benjamin Lewis added one hit each.
Nelson, Evan Lay, Jacob Collins and Jacob Engle had one hit each for the 14-10 Panthers.
HCHS took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Johnson singled, Gage Burkhart walked and Sizemore singled to load the bases. Rutherford brought in a run with a fielder’s choice ground out.
The score remained the same until the sixth inning when Evan Lay reached on an error before Nelson’s blast.
Harlan County travels to Hazard on Thursday before closing the regular season Friday at home against North Laurel.
