Bears overcome offensive woes to edge Burton

Harlan County overcame another bad night at the plate and three errors to win 4-3 over J.I. Burton on Monday in Norton, Va.

Brendan Rutherford, a junior righthander, gave up four hits and three unearned runs while striking out three and walking two two earn the win.

Two freshmen closed the game with one shutout inning each. Benjamin Lewis struck out one and walked two. Gabe Price allowed a hit and a walk to earn the save.

Sean Johnson and Jared Sizemore each had singles for the only HCHS hits. Dylan Cornett, the Bears’ leadoff hitter, scored three runs.

Cornett walked to open the game and eventually scored on Sizemore’s two-out single.

Cornett was safe on an error and Johnson singled to open the third inning. Gage Burkhart’s sacrifice brought in one run and Sizemore’s ground out brought in the other.

Cornett scored against in the fifth inning. He led off with a walk, moved to second on Johnson’s bunt and scored on an error.

Harlan County (11-12) returns to action Tuesday at home against Letcher Central.
