Defense saved the day on Friday and offense took over Saturday as Harlan County won three of three games over the weekend in the Mountain Softball Leader Classic at Hazard.
Harlan County edged 15th Region power Lawrence County 5-3 on Friday in a game shortened to six innings due to tournament time limitations.
Lawrence had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth when freshman center fielder Nikki Creech made a game-saving catch to end the game, reaching over the fence to take away a grand slam.
Lainey Cox, Creech and Tia King each had two hits to lead the HCHS offense. Farren Clark added a double. Kacie Russell and Haley Blakley contributed one single each.
Jenkins earned the win as she pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.
Jessie Johnson and King each had a double and single as Harlan County routed Wolfe County 14-3 on Saturday. Russell singled twice and drove in three runs. Clark, Jenkins and Blakley added one double each. Hannah Johnson had a single.
Jenkins struck out four and walked one as she pitched a five-hitter.
Russell pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk as Harlan County coasted to a 13-1 win in the final game of the tournament.
Clark had a home run and double to lead the HCHS offense. Cox drove in four runs with a pair of doubles. Creech, Jenkins, Russell, Blakley, Kaitlin Evans and Jessie Johnson added one single each.
The 19-5 Lady Bears travel to Knox Central tonight before hosting two district games on Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. against Middlesboro and 7:30 p.m. against Harlan.
