After being held scoreless in the first two innings, Middlesboro got the bats rolling. A seven-run rally in the fourth paved the way for a 12-0 victory over Harlan on Tuesday.
The Lady Jackets totaled 13 hits during the game with four batters tallying multiple hits. Aubrey Sowders and Madison Shields paced Middlesboro behind the plate. Sowders went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run. Shields finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run.
Kadi Cordell collected two RBIs on two hits, while Erica Gambrel went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
It was another successful night for Shields in the circle. The junior pitcher struck out nine batters in five innings while only allowing one hit and three walks.
The Lady Dragons could not gain any momentum during the game. At the plate, Madison Brewer landed the only hit while going 1-for-2 with a bunt single. Jayda Young, Savanna Smith and Jesse Cochran reached base on walks.
Brewer picked up the loss for Harlan.
Laura Durham set the pace in the third with a one out single. Shelby Back, who was the courtesy runner for Durham, scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Jackets a 1-0 lead.
An RBI single from Gambrel increased the lead to 2-0 with one out. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Lauren Spurlock scored on a hit from Bailey Hensley to widen the margin 3-0.
Middlesboro ended the inning with runs from Gambrel and Hensley to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Lady Jackets ended Harlan’s at-bat in quick fashion in the fourth and continued their hot streak at the plate. Middlesboro scored seven runs in the inning.
An RBI double from Spurlock got things started to give the Lady Jackets a 6-0 lead. Gambrel tacked on another RBI when a hit to left field drove home Back to increase the lead to 7-0.
A two-run RBI single from Sowders put Middlesboro up by nine runs (9-0). The Jackets secured the 12-run victory after Hensley, Sowders and Shields crossed the plate.
Middlesboro (11-3) will play in the Billy Joe Idol Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Harlan (5-6) will host Lynn Camp at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
