The Harlan County girls tennis team fought the good fight but lost to visiting Barbourville 3-2 in the first round of the inaugural 13th Region Team Tournament on Thursday.
According to a press release from the KHSAA, the team competition was created this year to ease physical stress on individual players during the singles/doubles tournament later in the season.
Eighth-grader Madison Bailey led the Lady Bears in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Huda Al-Darraji. Emily Eldridge of HC lost to Toni Bingham 1-6, 1-6, while her teammate Hannah Gaw fell 2-6, 2-6 to Peyton Erslan.
Harlan County’s doubles team of Grayson Raleigh and Dacey Bailey beat Barbourville’s team of Kelsey Warfield/Shaddys Gamble 2-0 6-4, 6-1. Lady Tigers Jenna Owens and Katie Shackleford defeated Lady Bears Makayla Whitaker and Brittany Goins 2-1 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
“These girls have come a long way, and I expect even better things for the rest of the season, said coach Wes Bailey.
Harlan County boys traveled to Clay County and defeated the Tigers 3-2 in their first round regional match on Monday.
Senior Logan Burris led the way in singles, winning in a tie-breaker over J.P. Byrd 6-3, 6-6, 9-7. Trevor Prewitt defeated Tate Baker in a super tie-breaker 6-6, 6-2, 10-5. Clay’s Brit Bowling defeated Ryan Sergent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Black Bears Jose Roque and Dylan Johnson sealed the deal with a 6-3, 6-4 win over John Combs and James Combs. Nick Turner and Jacob Colinger of HCHS fell to the Clay duo of Cody Bargo and Dylan Hobbs.
Harlan County will play at Corbin in the second round of the tournament on Monday.
Both boys and girls teams will return to action Friday at Whitley County.
Harlan fell 3-2 to Barbourville in boys regional tennis action.
Logan Murray and Trevor Pryor earned the singles wins for the Dragons.
Barbourville will play in the regional finals at Corbin on April 20.
