After two seasons of knocking on the door, Derrick Akal and the Harlan Lady Dragons broke through in 2016 with one of the best seasons in school history.
The Lady Dragons posted a 27-5 record, winning the 52nd District and 13th Region tournament titles in the process, as well as another 13th Region All “A” Classic title.
Standout junior point guard Jordan Brock led the Lady Dragons, earning all-state honors as she averaged 19.6 points per game. She was also named the player of the year in the Southeastern Kentucky Conference for Class A/2A players.
Akal, in his sixth season with the Lady Dragons, was named the league’s coach of the year. Players and coaches were honored Wednesday with a banquet at Pine Mountain State Park.
Harlan County also took home a top honor as sophomore wing Blair Green, also an all-state selection who averaged 19.6 points per game, was named player of the year among 3A/5A teams. The Lady Bears were second to Harlan in both the 52nd District and 13th Region, posting a 23-9 record despite having the region’s youngest teams with no seniors and a starting lineup that included two sophomores and three freshmen at the end of the season.
