On a cold Thursday evening, the Harlan offense wasn’t able to produce much against a visiting Barbourville team that had won only once in its first seven games.
As it turned out, sophomore Ashley Overbay didn’t need much help. Overbay struck out 11, walked two and allowed only one hit as the Lady Dragons improved to 4-2 with a 6-0 win.
“I thought we played well tonight,” Harlan coach Scott Lewis said. “We had three girls playing new positions due to injures. Ashley pretty much controlled the game for us with a solid performance. We’re still trying to find our groove, but we’re getting there.”
Jayda Young led the Harlan offense with two singles. Overbay, Madison Brewer, Kaitlin Cornett and Peyton Bennett added one single each.
Young led off game with a walk, stole second and scored on Brewer’s single.
Cornett and Young singled to start the third inning. Savannah Smith hit a grounder to second and an errant throw to first allowed Cornett and Young to score.
Overbay drove in two runs in the fifth with a single to center after Young had walked and Smith had reached base on an error. Overbay stole second and eventually scored on Jesse Cochran’s sacrifice fly.
Harlan returns to action Friday at Oneida Baptist.
