Four days after playing their best game of the season in a win over Hazard, the Harlan County Black Bears returned to the bad habits that had plagued them in a 3-6 start.

The Black Bears were their own worst enemy Saturday afternoon, stumbling their way through a five-error performance in an 11-3 loss to visiting Perry Central.

Perry Central (6-3) had only one error as Evan Hurt and Braxton Cottongame teamed on a four-hitter. Hurt gave up one run on two hits five innings, with five strikeouts and three walks. Cottongame allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Ronnie Long led the Commodores on offense with two doubles and two singles. Dylan Fields and Cottongame added a double and single each. Brody Dixon, Kameron Conley, Colten Walker and Parker Estep added one single each.

Devin Rodrigues led the HCHS offense with a double and single. Jared Sizemore and Caleb Carmical had one single each.

Brendan Rutherford suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits in three innings, with one strikeout and two walks. Josh Jordan gave up three runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and four walks. Carmical allowed three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, with one strikeout and no walks.

Perry Central built a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and second innings and one in the third.

Sizemore singled to open the HCHS third, then moved up on a wild pitch and sacrifice before scoring on Sean Johnson’s ground out.

Trey Early walked and Rodrigues doubled with two outs in the sixth inning, and both scored on Carmical’s single to center. The Bears loaded the bases when Gabe Price and Rutherford walked, but Sizemore’s line drive to left was chased down by Perry Central’s Anthony Hughes.

Harlan County (4-7) returns to action Tuesday at home against Union, Va.
