The third quarter was the difference Thursday as Pineville broke a halftime tie by outscoring Harlan 23-12 in the period on the way to a 58-51 victory at Harlan, avenging a loss last week at home.
Junior forward Cody Carnes had 15 of his game-high 29 points in the third quarter. Junior guard Trent Lefevers, who finished with 13 points, hit two 3-pointers and two free throws in the decisive period.
Harlan could manage only three field goals in the period, all 3-pointers by senior guard Drew Parks, who scored 11 points.
Freshman forward Kilian Ledford led a rally for the Dragons in the fourth quarter as he scored nine of his team-high 17 points. Robbie Curry added a 3-pointer and a basket.
The Lions put the game away at the free-throw line even though they missed 10 of 17 in the period.
Harlan plays Bell County on Tuesday in the opening round of the 52nd District Tournament at Harlan County. Pineville will play Barbourville on Wednesday in the 51st District Tournament at Lynn Camp.
Harlan edged Pineville 43-42 in junior varsity action as sophomore center Kendal Brock led the Dragons with 18 points.
Cade Barnes and Carter Barnes added nine and eight points, respectively. Jarrett McKenzie and Tate Bryson scored four each.
Chris Saylor led the Lions with 14 points. Marcus Estep and Josh Lawson added 12 each. Dillon Asher and Mikey Long scored two each.
