Top-seeded Devils advance with win in county tourney

Two underdogs and two favorites moved on in the opening round of the county seventh- and eighth-grade tournament on Saturday at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

Top-seeded Wallins advanced with a 40-17 win over Black Mountain. Alex Nantz scored 11 points and Elisha Smallwood added 10 to lead the unbeaten Purple Devils.

James Chasteen led Black Mountain with five points.

Rosspoint, seeded second, defeated Green Hills 46-32. Zac Collett scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats.

Green Hills was led by Dylan Gross with 17 points and Andrew Hoskins with 12.

James A. Cawood, seeded fifth, avenged two earlier losses by edging fourth-seeded Cawood 45-44 despite a 39-point explosion by James Smith.

Jay Harris scored 16 points, Chase Crider added 12 and Jerry Elliott contributed 11 to lead the balanced JACES attack.

Cumberland, seeded sixth, upset Evarts 42-29 as center Dakota Shepherd led the Redskins with 20 points.

Evan Aslinger led Evarts with 11 points.

Wallins will play James A. Cawood at 5:30 p.m. and Cumberland will meet Rosspoint at 7 in semifinal action Monday. The consolation and championship games are set for Tuesday.
