HCHS frosh, JV defeat Corbin

The Harlan County freshman and junior varsity teams swept visiting Corbin on Wednesday.

HCHS edged Corbin 31-29 in the freshman game, led by eighth-grade center Emily Long with 13 points. T.C. Somersall scored four. Emily Evans and Nikki Creech added three each. Savanna Smith, Reanna Middleton, Brooklyn Collins and Hannah Johnson scored two each.

Barnett led Corbin with 13 points. Scott scored six. Grubb and Medlin added three each. Robertson and Warren contributed two each.

Middleton scored 15 points to lead Harlan County to a 41-25 win in the junior varsity game.

Lainey Cox added seven for the Lady Bears. Morgan Blakley tossed in five. Morgan Napier and Hannah Wood scored four each. T.C. Somersall, Brooklyn Collins and Maci Napier added two each.

Cora Stevens scored 15 to lead Corbin. Monisa Scott added three. Savanna Finley, Jadyn Robertson and Lauren Steely tossed in two each. Madison McDavid added one.


Mountain View sweeps Dragons

Despite a 34-point, 10- rebound effort by Jacob Wilson, Harlan lost 51-50 to Mountain View on a last-second 3-pointer.

Charles David Morton added 11 points for the Dragons.

Baker scored 25 points to lead Mountain View. Farley, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer, added nine points.

Harlan, playing without top scorer Jackson Huff, fell 42-29 in the fifth- and sixth-grade game.

Cade Middleton scored 11 points and Cameron Lester added eight for the Dragons.

Hensley scored 26 to pace Mountain View. Baker added 13 points.

Freshman tournaments scheduled on Saturday

Harlan County will have a chance to defend freshman regional titles in both the boys and girls divisions on Saturday.

The girls regional will be at Corbin and will open with Bell County taking on Jackson County at 10:30 a.m. Harlan County will play Williamsburg at 11:30 a.m. Corbin will play the Bell County-Jackson County winner at 12:30 p.m. The championship game is slated for 1:30 p.m.

The boys final four will be played Saturday at South Laurel. First-round matchups and four quarterfinals games were played at various schools around the region to determine the semifinalists.

Harlan County will play South Laurel at 10 a.m. in a rematch of last year’s finals. Bell County will take on Whitley County at 11 a.m. The championship game is scheduled at noon.


County tournament opens Saturday at James A. Cawood

The seventh- and eighth-grade tournament starts Saturday at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

The schedule includes:


11 a.m. – Wallins vs Black Mountain; 12:15 p.m. – Cawood vs James A. Cawood; 1:30 p.m. – Evarts vs Cumberland; 2:45 p.m. – Rosspoint vs Green Hills


Semifinals – 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.


Finals – 7 p.m
