Defending champ Harlan County had to battle back from a 16-point halftime deficit to stay alive in the 13th Region Freshman Tournament, defeating visiting Knox Central 65-60 on Tuesday in a first-round game

Matthew Simpson scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Bears rallied for the victory after falling behind 17-7 after one quarter and 39-23 by halftime.

“We started off kind of rough. We were down 21 at point in the second quarter, but the kids responded. They dug in and played as hard they could play and hoof things happened,” said Shane Shackleford, who coaches the team with Gary Greer. “They really stepped up and made plays when they had to make plays. They compete hard every day.”

Alex Pace and Gabe Price added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the 6-4 Bears.

Dane Imel scored 16 to lead the Panthers, including nine in the first quarter. Jaylen Adams scored six of his 10 points in the opening period. Dalton Elliott added nine points.

The Bears are scheduled to travel to Middlesboro for a quarterfinal game. The regional semifinals and finals will be played at South Laurel on Jan. 30.

Harlan County suffered a pair of one-point losses on Jan. 16 at South Laurel, falling to the host Cardinals 45-44 and to 12th Region power Pulaski County 65-64.

Pulaski hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter to built a 24-11 lead, but the Bears fought back and took the lead late before falling in the final seconds.

Pace scored 21 to lead the Bears. Price added 15 and Matthew Simpson scored 11.

Michael Simpson led HCHS against South Laurel with 14 points.
