HCHS loses 2 of 3 in tourney

The Harlan County Lady Bears traveled to northern Kentucky to face two of the top high school girls basketball programs in western Kentucky.

Harlan County knocked off defending 3rd Region champ Muhlenberg County 56-49 on Tuesday but lost to traditional 1st Region power Marshall County 55-44 on Wednesday in the final round of the LaRosa’s Holiday Classic at Conner High School.

The Lady Bears finished 1-2 in the tournament, falling 49-36 to Bishop Brossart on Monday.

Harlan County could not stop Marshall County star Hannah Langhi, a 6-1 junior forward, in the fifth-place game Wednesday. Langhi, the daughter of former Marshall County and Vanderbilt star Dan Langhi, scored 28 points to lead the Lady Marhals.

Harlan County was led by sophomore guard Blair Green with 14 points and sophomore center Kaylea Gross with 13 points.

The 9-5 Lady Bears will return to action Saturday in the first game of a district doubleheader at Bell County.

One night after crumbling in the second half in a loss to Bishop Brossart, the Lady Bears showed some mental toughness down the stretch in a win over defending 3rd Region champ Muhlenberg County.

Harlan County outscored Muhlenberg 22-15 in the fourth quarter to break open a game that was tied 34-all after three periods. Gross scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the last quarter. K.K. Johnson and Green each connected on three of four free throws in the period, and freshman guard Phebe McHargue hit two shots from the field, including a 3-pointer.

Breann Turner had six of her 12 points in the first quarter as HCHS built a 14-9 lead after one period. The Lady Bears were held to only six points in the second quarter as the lead was cut to three points, at 20-17.

Raegan Blackburn, who led Muhlenberg with 18 points on six 3-pointers, hit three of the treys in the third quarter to pull her team even.

Green added 11 points for the Lady Bears, who improved to 9-4 on the season.
