Harlan County survived a close call in the first round of the Seahawk Holiday Classic at Hilton Head, S.C., edging Charlotte Latin, N.C., 56-54 in overtime.
Sophomore guard Blair Green scored 28 points and sophomore center Kaylea Gross added 13 to lead the Lady Bears, who improved to 7-2.
Gross and Green accounted for all seven of Harlan County’s points in the extra period as Gross had a basket and two free throws and Green hit three free throws.
The Lady Bears grabbed a 13-6 lead after one quarter as Gross and Green each had two baskets while Leah Evans and Kate Evans added one each.
Charlotte Christian cut the deficit to 24-20 at halftime. Green had three of Harlan County’s five baskets in the period. Gross and K.K. Johnson added one each.
Harlan County extended its lead to as many as 10 points in the third quarter and led 36-30 going into the fourth period. Green had 10 of the Lady Bears’ 12 points in the period.
Charlotte Latin battled back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Bears 19-13 to pull even at 52-all at the end of regulation. Gross and Breann Turner each had two baskets for HCHS. Green hit five of six at the line.
We played hard and finished plays down the stretch,” Harlan County coach Debbie Green said. “Blair hit some big free throws down the stretch. Kaylea had big plays and Rebecca (Middleton) had two big defensive stops in the last minute of overtime. Foul trouble hurt us, but it’s a great game to pull out. We beat a good team.”
Harlan County will play tournament host Pendleton County on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.
