WILLIAMSBURG — Harlan County swept three freshman games Saturday at Whitley County High School, defeating Williamsburg 36-26, Buckhorn 69-35 and the host Colonels 50-45.
The toughest test of the day for the 5-2 Black Bears was the final game as HCHS overcame a seven-point halftime deficit.
Gabe Price, who led HCHS with 26 points, scored 11 in the third quarter as Harlan County fought back to take the lead before falling behind by one at the end of the period.
Alex Pace, who added 14 points, scored nine in the fourth quarter, including two free throws to break a 38-38 tie, then a 3-pointer to put the Bears in control. Michael Simpson added a basket to give HCHS a five-point advantage, a lead they maintained at the free throw line.
Price scored 19 points and Michael Simpson added 15 as the Bears rolled past Buckhorn. The Bears raced to a 21-2 lead and were never threatened. Price and Xavier Simmons each hit 3-pointers in the second quarter as the lead grew to 43-20 halftime and then 62-26 after three quarters.
Harlan County overcame a four-point deficit in the first game of the day against Williamsburg. The Bears overcame a sluggish first half by dominating the second half.
Price scored nine points to lead the Bears. Jared Hawkins and Michael Simpson added eight each.
