After three years of falling one game short of a league title, the Harlan fifth- and sixth-grade team finally took the next step earlier this month with three wins at Lynn Camp High School to capture the 13th Region All “A” Middle School Conference title.

“I have a good group of kids that were very determined to win the conference championship,” said Harlan coach Lonnie Huff. “We talked about it from day one as our goal, and they worked hard to reach it. They wanted to be the first group to win the fifth- and sixth-grade tournament title since joining the conference five years ago. We were runners-up the last three years, so we have had success in the league but have lost in three straight championship games by five points or less. To win it this year and get over that hurdle was great for our middle school program and these kids. They put in the time and effort. They deserved to have this feeling of winning a championship. I am happy for them.”

Led by a 30-point, 15-rebound game by Jackson Huff, Harlan (13-2) defeated Williamsburg 50-35 in the championship game.

Harlan defeated Middlesboro 35-29 in the semifinals behind a 24-point, 15-rebound game by Huff.

The Dragons survived a scare in the first round to defeat Red Bird 47-35 after a couple of blowout wins over the Cardinals earlier in the season. Huff scored 20 points and Kaleb McLendon added 16 for the Dragons.
