Best known for their explosive offense on their way to back-to-back regional finals, the Harlan Lady Dragons are showing then can also play very good defense in a 4-0 start this season, including a 58-27 rout of defending 14th Region champ Letcher Central on Friday.
The visiting Lady Cougars were held to single digits each quarter and managed only 11 field goals in the game.
Senior guard Brooklyn Massingill had a big game for Harlan with a game-high 18 points. Junior forward Emma Bianchi reached double figures for the fourth time in four games with 11 points, including two 3-pointers.
Mackenzie King, a sophomore forward, scored seven points in the first quarter and sophomore guard Taylor Simpson added a pair of 3-pointers as Harlan took control early in building a 15-6 lead.
Massingill took over in the second quarter with three baskets. Senior center Katie King added two baskets as the Lady Dragons built a 31-15 advantage by halftime.
Bianchi scored six points in the third quarter and Jordan Brock added five points as Harlan extended its lead to 48-20 going into the fourth quarter.
Alyssa Adams scored 11 points to lead the Lady Cougars.
Harlan plays host to Bell County on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s 13th Region Tournament championship game.
