Beating Wallins this season will take a great game from one of the county’s seven other middle school teams, a point driven home three times Saturday during the Grade School Black Bear Tournament at Harlan County High School

Rosspoint, however, showed it may be possible in the finals by playing the Devils close most of the way before falling 52-44, a big improvement from earlier in the week when Wallins won by 21 at Rosspoint.

Wallins is led by two of the top eighth-graders in the county, and both played well Saturday. Elisha Smallwood, a 6-2 center, poured in 23 points to lead the Devils in the championship game. Point guard Taylor Spurlock added 14 points, including nine in the first quarter when Wallins built an early 10-points lead.

Rosspoint featured a balanced attack throughout the tournament, led by three seventh-graders who carried the Cats to a county title last year in the fifth- and sixth-grade division. Guards Matt Brown and Josh Turner scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the finals. Hunter Helton, the Cats’ center, added 11 points.

Turner had seven points in the third quarter as Rosspoint got as close as five points before Wallins pulled away once again the final period.

Rosspoint advanced to the finals with a 62-38 win over Black Mountain as as Turner was one of four Wildcats in double figures with 18 points, followed by Brown with 15, Helton with 12 and Hunter Blevins with 10.

Demarco Hopkins scored 13 to lead Black Mountain.

Alex Nantz had 12 points as Wallins downed Cawood 44-24 in the other semifinal.

Jacob Engle scored 13 points and James Smith added 11 to lead the Comets.

In first-round action, Rosspoint defeated Cumberland 43-23, Black Mountain downed Green Hills 35-32, Wallins beat James A. Cawood 58-31 and Cawood edged Evarts 48-47 in overtime.
