One thing was clear from watching all eight county fifth- and sixth-grade teams play during the season-opening Grade School Black Bear Tournament on Saturday at Harlan County High School — beating the Cumberland Redskins will be an extremely difficult task.

Cumberland swept through three opponents, led by standout guard Jordan Akal, to win the preseason tournament title and establish itself as the prohibitive favorite in its division.

Akal poured in 21 points and Jaeden Gist added 16 as Cumberland dismantled Rosspoint 56-14 in the finals.

Rosspoint overcame an early deficit to defeat James A. Cawood 30-21 in the semifinals. Thomas Jordan scored 12 points to lead the Wildcats.

Wesley Jennings scored eight to pace the Trojans.

Akal scored 16 as Cumberland rolled to a 44-10 win over Black Mountain.

In first-round games, Cumberland downed Wallins 43-27, Rosspoint defeated Green Hills 33-18, Black Mountain overpowered Cawood 46-27 and James A. Cawood defeated Evarts 42-32.
