Middle school teams to play at HCHS

The county middle school basketball teams will open their season with the Grade School Black Bear Tournament at Harlan County High School on the next two Saturdays.

The schedule for the 5-6 tournament on Nov. 7 includes:

Black Mountain vs Cawood – 10 a.m.

Cumberland vs Wallins – 11 a.m.

Rosspoint vs Green Hills – Noon

Evarts vs James A. Cawood – 1 p.m.

Semifinals – 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Finals – 4 p.m.

The schedule for the 7-8 tournament on Nov. 14 includes:

Green Hills vs Black Mountain – 10 a.m.

Rosspoint vs Cumberland – 11 a.m.

Wallins vs James A. Cawood – Noon

Cawood vs Evarts – 1 p.m.

Semifinals – 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Finals – 4 p.m.

Harlan, Barbourville split games

Harlan split its season-opening games against Barbourville in middle school basketball action, winning 49-28 in fifth- and sixth-grade action and losing 49-28 in the seventh- and eighth-grade game.

Connor Scearse scored 10 points and Charles David Morton added nine in the Dragons’ 49-28 loss.

Jackson Huff poured in 24 points, hitting 11 of 19 shots from the field, and pulled down 11 rebounds in Harlan’s 37-22 win in the fifth- and sixth-grade game.

HHS playoff game will be played Thursday

Harlan football coach J.B. Donahue confirmed Monday that Harlan’s first-round playoff game against Jenkins will be moved from Friday to Thursday.

The Green Dragons finished the regular season with an 8-2 mark and won the District 7 championship. Jenkins finished fourth in District 8.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 at Green Dragon Field.
