Harlan earned a trip to the final four of the 13th Region Tournament with a four-set win Monday over Clay County in the opening round at South Laurel High School.
“We had a great team effort last night,” said Harlan coach Tara Posey after the Lady Dragons claimed a 25-16, 19-25, 25-11, 25-11 victory. “We still need to have better movement and communication in order to compete with a good Corbin team in the next round.”
Emma Bianchi, a 6-foot junior, dominated at the net as she finished with 24 kills, along with two aces and two blocks. Jesse Cochran also had a big night with nine aces, eight kills and one block. Shanae Thomas has 10 set assists and seven aces. Hannah Vaughn contributed four aces and one set assist. Sydney Horton had three set assists and two aces. Callie Wilson contributed two aces and two kills. Taylor Smith added two set assists. Jasmine Honeycutt had one set assist.
The first round of the tournament concludes Tuesday with Jackson County (13-17) playing Knox Central (9-17) at 6 p.m. and South Laurel (27-7) taking on Harlan County (5-23) at 7:30.
The semifinals are Wednesday as Corbin (15-15) meets Harlan (18-7) at 6:30, followed by the winners from Tuesday playing at 8 p.m. The championship game is set for Thursday at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the state tournament.
