In a game that felt more like a coronation than a championship, the Evarts Lady Cats completed a season of perfection with a 44-14 rout of Rosspoint on Tuesday in the finals of the fifth- and sixth-grade county tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School.
Evarts finished the season at 21-0, playing only game all year that ended within single digits. The Lady Cats did not allow a county team to get within 15 points of them.
“It was an unbelievable team we had this year,” Evarts coach Jamie Smith said. “They’ve worked the last three years in AAU getting better and getting better.”
Balance has been a key to the Lady Cats’ success all year and it was on display in the finals as Jaylin Smith and Jaylin Preston each scored 14 points and Aliyah Cloud added 10. Alexis Branson chipped in with six points.
“I’ve never seen a team that passes the ball the way they have. I’ve just been blessed to have been a part of it,” Smith said. “We could have probably turned two or three of them into superstars, but our goal was to be a family and share the ball.”
Preston hit three 3-pointers in the opening quarter as Evarts quickly ended any suspense about the outcome. Smith added six points as the Evarts press led to numerous turnovers in pushing the lead to 19-2 after one quarter.
Smith had eight points in the second period as the lead grew to 34-10 by halftime. Evarts pushed its advantage to 30 midway through the third quarter, starting a running clock, and led 44-12 going into the final period.
Starters for both teams watched the fourth quarter from the bench as Evarts coasted to the victory, its second straight blowout of the tournament. Evarts defeated Cumberland 47-15 in the semifinals on Monday.
“I was worried all year about how to keep this team hungry win after win, but they wanted it,” Smith said. “I’m excited for them.”
