Favorites advance in first round of county tourney


The top three seeds moved on with convincing victories Saturday in the fifth- and sixth-grade county tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School.

Top-seeded Evarts grabbed a big lead early on the way to a 25-8 win over Green Hills in the opening game. Alexis Branson and Jaylin Smith each scored eight to lead the 19-0 Lady Cats.

Rosspoint, seeded third, defeated Black Mountain 39-20 behind a 20-point performance from Keely North.

Emma Mulkey led the TIgerettes with 10 points.

Cawood, seeded second, downed Wallins 30-19 as LeeAnn Engle scored 12 points and Lauren Smith added 10.

Taytum Griffin scored 10 to lead the Lady Devils.

Cumberland, seeded fifth, edged fourth-seeded James A. Cawood 17-16 in the only close game of the day.

Sharon Woodberry and Maisey Sergent each scored six for the Lady Skins.

Star Hardy led the Trojanettes with six points.

Evarts will play Cumberland at 5:30 p.m. and Rosspoint will take on Cawood at 7 p.m. in the semifinals on Monday.

The consolation and championship games are set for Tuesday.
