If anyone didn’t know the Harlan County track and field team has arrived, the Black Bears served notice Friday at Knox Central High School.

The Harlan County girls squad completely dominated the nine-team field, winning seven events as they cruised to a 50-point victory in the Tommy Smith Invitational.

The rout was the first road invitational win for a girls team in the nine-year history of the program, according to coach Ryan Vitatoe.

“It’s the most complete performance we’ve had in my four years,” he said. “I loved the grit we showed in this meet. We still have a long way to go, but with that type of mindset, the road to our goal becomes much less bumpy.”

The Lady Bears won three of four relay events. The team of Phebe McHargue, K.K. Johnson, Hailey Conway and Kali Nolan won the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 200-meter events, while McHargue, Johnson and Nolan teamed with Kassy Owens to win the 4 x 400-meter relay.

Harlan County also owned the hurdle events, with Nolan and sophomore Abby Stephens winning the 300-meter and 100-meter races, respectively.

McHargue joined Nolan as a four-event winner, winning the 100-meter dash, while Conway won the 200-meter dash.

Harlan sent only one female participant, but she made her presence known. Junior Mackenzie King won both the shot put and the discus throw.

The Harlan County boys squad had a memorable night as well, claiming second place by edging a Whitley County team that handed the Black Bears a 43-point defeat on March 30.

“These boys have been impressive all season,” Vitatoe said. “We are undermanned, but they refuse to accept that as an excuse. They compete to win. It starts with a core group of guys, and it’s been infectious.”

The boys had four second-place finishes, two each by Alex Lewis and Willie Doan. Lewis, a junior, finished second to Bell County’s Mitchell Miracle in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs. Doan finished second to Harlan’s Story Mitchell in the pole vault on a tiebreaker, and also placed second in the 110-meter hurdles.

Harlan County will take a split squad to an all-comers meet Tuesday at Leslie County. Both Harlan County and Harlan will participate in the Area 9 Championship meet Friday at Harlan County.
