Ashley Overbay pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks as Harlan opened its softball season in impressive fashion with a 12-0 win Monday over visiting Barbourville.
“I am happy to get the first game under our belts, and it’s always better when you come away with a win,” said first-year coach David Overbay. “We were able to try a few different things tonight player-wise and position-wise. Everyone contributed in some way. This is a talented group of young ladies, and I am very excited about the rest of the season.”
Ai-yanna Harriston led the Harlan offense with two triples and a single. Payton Bennett pounded out two doubles. Kaytlin Cornett added a double and single. Jesse Cochran contributed one double. Alyssa Moses, Mackenzie King, Savanna Smith, Emily Sizemore, Jayda Young, AnnMarie Bianchi and Haven Saylor had one single each.
Harlan (1-0) returns to action Thursday at home against Cumberland Gap, Tenn.
