Cumberland wins twice in bowl games at HCHS
Cumberland won two scrimmages Saturday over Evarts in the Thunder in the Mountains Bowl at Coal Miners Memorial Stadium.
The Redskins raced to a 26-6 lead on the way to a 34-22 win in the seventh- and eighth-grade game.
Zach Collett threw for two touchdowns, one each to Tyler Flanary and Josh Whitehead.
Josh Swanner ran for two touchdowns and Whitehead ran for one. Swanner added a pair of two-point conversions.
Demarco Hopkins led Evarts with 171 yards rushing on 20 carries. He completed two passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Ward ran for 72 yards on 10 carries and had two touchdown catches for 85 yards. Lake Caudill led the Evarts defense with eight tackles and one fumble recovery.
The Redskins won 10-0 in the fifth- and sixth-grade game as Jonah Swanner scored on a long touchdown run in the third quarter. Kris Cornett added the two-point conversion.
Cumberland also recorded a safety.
The Redskins are at home against Lynn Camp on Tuesday. Evarts plays host to Harlan on Thursday.
The New Harlan fifth- and sixth-grade team was no match for Caudill, a Madison County team led by former Cawood all-state running back David Hensley, in the opening scrimmage of the day.
Caudill scored on an 80-yard run on the opening play on the way to a 38-0 win.
New Harlan will open its regular season schedule Tuesday at Pineville.
Hoskins powers Harlan to a rout of Lynn Camp
Kelly Beth Hoskins poured in 27 points as Harlan (4-4) rolled to a 49-8 win Monday at Lynn Camp in seventh- and eighth-grade basketball action.
Lynn Camp edged Harlan 23-19 in overtime in the fifth- and sixth-grade game.
Raegan Jones scored 11 to lead the Lady Dragons.

Smith leads Lady Cats to win at Bell Central
Jaylin Smith scored 17 points to lead Evarts to a 42-37 season-opening win Monday over visiting Bell Central in seventh- and eighth-grade basketball action.
Evarts fell 33-17 in the fifth- and sixth-grade game.
Isabelle Kirby paced the Lady Cats with six points.
Evarts opens its county schedule Monday at home against Black Mountain.
