Local team advances to regional in Chicago

The Tri-City All-Stars left little doubt they were the state’s top Junior League team in 2016, rolling to three wins over the weekend in Lagrange in the state tournament for ages 13-14, capped by an 11-1 win Sunday over North Oldham, the tournament host.

Tri-City will advance to super regional competition on July 24 in Chicago. The Kentucky champs will play the Nebraska and Wisconsin champions in the opening day of the tournament.

T.C. Somersall led Tri-City in the championship game victory with an inside-the-park homer, along with a double and two singles. Brandy Adams, Mikalyn Foutch and Destiny Cornett-Clark added a double and single each. Emily Collett contributed a triple. Allee Galloway added a double. Hannah Rodrigues had one single.

Cornett-Clark earned the win on the mound, her second of the tournament, as she scattered seven hits while striking out one and walking two.

The Tri-City All-Stars moved to within one win of a state championship with a pair of blowout victories Saturday in Lagrange, 22-4 over Prestonsburg and 17-2 over tournament host North Oldham.

Third baseman Hannah Johnson led the Tri-City offense against Prestonsburg with two doubles and a single. Catcher Brandy Adams had two triples. Hannah Rodrigues contributed a double and single. Haven Saylor, Mikalyn Foutch and Emily Sizemore added two singles each. Emily Collett had a double. Allie Galloway and Destiny Cornett-Clark had one single each.

Rodridgues started on the mound for Tri-City, giving up three runs with three strikeouts and six walks. Emily Robinson allowed one run in four innings, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Cornett-Clark gave up four hits while walking two and striking out one as she pitched a complete game against North Oldham.

Adams led Tri-City on offense with two doubles and a single. Johnson added a triple and two singles. Cornett-Clark contributed three singles. Collett and Rodrigues each added a double and single. Emily Sizemore and T.C. Somersall each contributed two singles. Galloway, Saylor and Foutch each had one single.

The state champion will advance to the seven-team Great Lakes Regional in Chicago on July 22-25. The Junior League World Series will be held July 29-Aug. 3 in Seattle.
