Tri-City rolled into district competition by defeating Harlan Green for the second time in Area 4 competition. Tri-City took second in the Area 4 Tournament with a 19-6 five-inning win Friday at Huff Park.
Harlan Green led 3-2 after one inning, but Tri-City took control with an 11-run second inning, and Tri-City pitcher Tyler Lunsford took over from there. Lunsford was the winner as he gave up four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three before reaching the 75-pitch limit one out away from the game ending via the 10-run mercy rule.
Alex Creech led Tri-City at the plate for the third straight game as he pounded out a triple and two singles. Lunsford added three singles. Liam Garland had a triple and single, driving in three runs. Shawn Carroll added a double and single with two RBI. Aiden Craig, Caleb Banks, Josh Duckworth and Chris Raleigh contributed one single each.
Jayden Sutton led Harlan Green with two singles. Jake Brewer, Brayden McMillian and Jace Brown added one single each.
Creech led off with a triple and scored on Carroll’s ground out to give Tri-City an early lead. Sutton and McMillian had hits in the bottom of the first as Harlan answered with three runs.
Carroll led Tri-City with a double in the 11-run second inning. Garland, Lunsford, Banks and Duckworth added consecutive two-out hits.
Garland had an RBI triple in Tri-City’s six-run fifth inning. Creech, Carroll and Lunsford added singles.
Duckworth faced three batters and Raleigh faced one after Lunsford reached the pitch limit, combining for four walks. The game ended when a Harlan runner was picked off third base.
Tri-City will advance to the eight-team district tournament starting next week at Corbin.
