Lady Bears down Letcher, Bell

Playing at home for the only time this summer, the Harlan County Lady Bears swept Letcher Central and Bell County on Tuesday in both varsity and junior varsity scrimmages.

Harlan County defeated Letcher Central 42-27 and Bell County 46-22 in the varsity scrimmages to improve to 9-2 on the summer.

Up by only four at halftime against Letcher Central, the Lady Bears pulled away to start the second half. Kaylea Gross, Blair Green and Reanna Middleton had baskets to start the half, pushing the lead to 10. Green, Gross, Phebe McHargue and Lainey Cox scored to complete a 14-2 run to open the half. Leah Evans and Green each had one basket and Middleton added two as HCHS built a 17-point lead.

Harlan County raced to a 16-6 lead against Bell County as Green, Gross and Middleton led the Lady Bears to a strong start.

The HCHS lead was 11 going into the second half. Phebe McHargue had a steal and found Green for a layup to start a 10-0 spurt. Rebecca Middleton closed the run by hitting three of four free throws.

K.K. Johnson, Morgan Napier and Cox scored late in the scrimmage as the Lady Bears built a 26-point advantage.

Green scored 14 to lead the Lady Bears. Gross and Reanna Middleton added seven each. Rebecca Middleton scored six. Cox added four, followed by Napier with three, Johnson and McHargue with two each and Breanna Turner with one.

Harlan County defeated Letcher Central 26-17 and Bell County 36-17 in junior varsity scrimmages.

The Lady Bears trailed Bell 15-14 at halftime before starting the second half with a 10-0 run on baskets by Hannah Wood and Morgan Blakley and two free throws by Dixie Ewing. Emily Evans and Kassye Owens had baskets as HCHS closed the scrimmage with a 12-0 run.

Harlan County defeated Grace Christian, Tenn., and Northwood, Tenn., and lost to Gatlinburg-Pittman, Tenn., in varsity scrimmages Monday at Lincoln Memorial University. The Lady Bears lost to Cumberland Gap, Tenn., and defeated Coffee County, Tenn. in junior varsity scrimmages.

Harlan County returns to action Wednesday in the University of Kentucky Team Camp. Harlan will play three scrimmages on Thursday at UK.
