Gann wins again

One-stroke win gives Gann fifth title

There’s nothing like a trip to the Harlan Country Club to help Matt Gann get his game back together.

“I’m dealing with a little bit right now. I have two girls at home, one that’s 2 years old, so my mind is kind of away from golf a little bit, but coming back to this place kind of helps,” Gann said. “Pete Cornett battled, and that’s what I needed. He’s a great player and we went head to head.”

Gann couldn’t shake Cornett until the final hole on Sunday as he had a par on No. 18 while Cornett bogied to give Gann a one-stroke win and his fifth Harlan Invitational title in six years.

“It was back and forth, and I was on the back side quite a bit,” Gann said. “I had birdied 17 and we were tied. I think he lost his footing on this second shot. I thought he’d still make par, but he didn’t, and I hit a pretty good shot. It was fortunate for me.”

Gann, a Pineville resident who coaches golf at Bell County High School, finished the two-day tournament with a two-under par 134, one stroke ahead of Cornett, of Harlan. Jason Vance and Jason Estep tied for third as each shot a 137.

Gann and Cornett were tied at 66 after the opening round Saturday, four strokes ahead of Vance and Andrew Forester.
