CORBIN — After watching his team give up 78 points in a loss last month at Barbourville, Harlan coach Derrick Akal knew he had to try something new in the rematch Wednesday in the opening round of the 13th Region Tournament. The Lady Dragons’ 2-3 zone frustrated Barbourville for much of the night, at least for the first 31 minutes, as Harlan advanced with a 53-51 win.“The first time we played them we played them strictly man, plus we were a little short-handed” Akal said. “This big floor worried me running up and down the floor with them, so we zoned them up and just hoped they didn’t make too many 3-pointers, and they didn’t make as many as I thought they would.”
Six straight 50th District titles and a 10-game winning streak were not enough to place the Corbin Redhounds as the favorite heading into their matchup with the Jackson County Generals in the first round of the 13th Region Tournament.Even against the odds, the Redhounds relished the role of the underdog and proved that March Madness is still alive with their 52-48 win over a very good Generals’ squad on Friday.

MIDDLESBORO — “O-ver-ra-ted, O-ver-ra-ted.”Maci Morris heard the chant from the Harlan student section in the third quarter of the 52nd District Tournament championship game Thursday as the Lady Dragons chopped a 16-point Bell County halftime lead to four. That kind of attention comes with the territory for 6-foot all-state guards headed for the University of Kentucky, and Morris answered the best way she knows. An old school player in a modern world, Scotty Bailey doesn’t subscribe to the me-first approach that many of his counterparts in the high school sports scene of today follow.Bailey concerns himself with only one stat when the game is over and that’s whether his team won or lost, a big reason why the coaches at Harlan County High School are unanimous in singing the praises of the 6-foot multi-sport star.
