Helping build over 100 pinewood cars, The Bank of Harlan President Steve Tolliver is trying to help the Harlan Boys and Girls Club raise funds at their first annual “Boys and Girls Club 100” race hosted by the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce. It will be held at the club at noon on Oct. 27.
“The kids will race their little cars in a single elimination match that is sure to be thrilling to them and all of those in attendance,” said Tolliver. “The children of the Boys and Girls Club have been busy this summer and fall painting and decorating the cars. Materials and basic construction of the cars, along with the race track were donated by Southern Wholesale, myself and George Howard.”
Tolliver said 100 percent of the funds raised from the event will benefit the children of Harlan County. He said the race will be similar to the derby held by Cub Scouts each year.
“The Cawood Ledford Boys and Girls Club serves nearly 2,000 children across Harlan County each year through after-school programs, sports leagues and the SMART Moves drug prevention program that is offered in schools around the county,” said Harlan County Chamber of Commerce member Drew Adams. “Your tax deductible donation of $50 will benefit the club and get you and your business recognized as a sponsor on one of the cars as well. Your name will also appear on a banner that will hang in the club during the week of the event.
“The kids are taking so much pride in this,” said Adams. “They are excited about it — excited to find out who will be sponsoring the car they painted. They are really into this. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about anyway. We hope to sell all 100 cars. If it is successful, maybe we’ll make it an annual event.”
Adams said sponsorship forms are available at the Boys and Girls Club, any location of The Bank of Harlan, Southern Wholesale, from Tolliver, Howard or authorized members and representatives of the Boys and Girls Club.
