During a regular scheduled meeting of the Cumberland Tourist and Convention Commission earlier this week, Director Tracy Bailey gave each member a newly completed holiday event schedule for the cities of Cumberland, Benham and Lynch. She said the brochure is available for anyone wishing to have one and available at the Cumberland Tourism office.
“Bobbie Gothard, Susie (Williams) and I worked very hard on this brochure,” said Bailey. “It looks wonderful and will be beneficial and helpful during the holiday season. One of the events on the schedule is our tree lighting, which will be Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. on Main Street. There will be refreshments, train rides and Santa.”
Bailey also noted after bids were submitted, she and vice chairman Cleon Cornett, who were appointed for this project, ordered four windows for the tourism office at a cost of $878. She said the windows are guaranteed for life.
Bailey went on to say she has applied for a strategic planning grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Center for Rural Development and hopes to hear if they will receive the grant by the first of the year.
“We have decorated the city for the holiday season,” said Bailey. “Cleon drove the bucket truck for us that the Power Board allowed us to use free of charge. Mayor Carl Hatfield let us use city employees to put the Christmas lights up and that helped a lot. Everyone worked together this year and it saved us a substantial amount of money.”
Bailey told commission members a motorcycle route is being planned for their Trail Town project. She said they hoped to have it ready by spring.
Plans were made for the tourism Christmas dinner, which will be held at the Senior Citizens Center in Cumberland on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. Bailey noted due to inclement weather, their Haunted Ranger Station project was only held two days, however, she said it was a success.
The commission went into executive session regarding personnel and returned with no action taken.
