At a “working” meeting of the Evarts Tourist and Convention Commission this week, members cleaned, painted and prepared Christmas decorations for the city.
Plans were also finalized for the Christmas Parade, which will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2.
“This year’s theme is ‘A Christmas Dream,’” said commission clerk Kristi Lamb.
“Line up for the parade will begin at 1 p.m. behind the north Evarts Elementary School. The parade route will leave the North Evarts Elementary School continuing to Kelly Street, turning onto KY 38 and then continuing onto KY 215. The parade will end at the old Evarts High School,” she said.
Lamb said there will be cash prizes for the first and second place overall winners.
“We’ve got the Shriners, Harlan Honor Guard, Evarts and other local fire departments, local law enforcement, Harlan County Rescue Squad and the Harlan County Ridge Runners participating in the parade this year,” said Lamb. “We’ve got several Girl Scout troops, lots of floats and cartoon characters. The city will be doing their float and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will conclude the parade. Only one Santa will be allowed in the parade.”
Commission member Tina Couch said she is looking forward to this year’s parade as she has always done in the past.
Couch said this parade is for all residents of Clover Fork and Harlan County. She said in the past they have had people from Cumberland and other surroundings areas who come to enjoy the parade.”
“We have the event during the day because it enables everyone to get out and enjoy the parade, especially the elderly,” said Couch. “It’s not as cold during the day and it’s more convenient for the residents.”
Commission member Darrin Middleton said this year’s parade has a new flavor with the addition of 12 to 15 cartoon characters walking in the parade.
He said the tourist commission works hard every year to host the parade as a way of giving back to the community.
“It’s a time for Clover Fork and the county to come together as a whole community and enjoy fellowship together,” said Middleton. “I hope everyone will make plans to come out, especially the kids. There is nothing like watching the little kids when they see Santa at the end of the parade. Those smiles — that’s the best part.”
During the meeting, commission members re-painted, cleaned and sorted Christmas decorations they recently purchased to be placed around the city.
“We have approximately 20 wreaths we’re cleaning and re-shaping tonight,” said Lamb. “We’ll be hanging them in the next few days so that we have the city decorated before the Christmas Parade.”
