Thirteen years after roaming the sidelines at Evarts, Harlan coach David Parks found himself in the win column again on Thursday. Parks’ Green Dragons picked up their first win of the season with a 63-11 rout of visiting Riverside Christian.
“We needed a win. It is good for confidence, because we have had three really tough games to start the season,” said Parks.
Nathan Young continued his strong start to the season with nine points in the first quarter as Harlan jumped out to a 26-4 lead. Young finished with 11 points to lead all scorers.
Sophomore Isaiah Johnson had six of his 10 points in the second quarter as the Green Dragons pushed the lead to 41-6 at the half.
Harlan used much of the second half as an opportunity to work on ball movement and spacing while continuing to pull away.
“Riverside is doing the best they can. I told the kids it doesn’t make any difference who you play, it is about playing against your own ability. That is what you try to do,” Parks said.
Harlan (1-3) returns to action today at Bell County in a girls/boys district double-header.
“They have two or three very good players. We have to play well, but I think we have a shot,” Parks said. “I feel like we will be competitive and play hard. If we can go down there and steal a game it would be great for us and the program.”
Riverside Christian (0-6) will travel to Lexington Christian on Saturday.
Harlan cruised to a 38-13 win in the junior varsity contest.
Aaron Saylor and Tanner Morris each had 10 points to pace the Green Dragons. Manny Davis and Drew Parks each recorded six points. Andrew Varney tossed in four points, while Caleb Hogue added two points.
Colton Smith had five points to lead Riverside Christian.
