A Cawood man faces multiple charges after police said he lead them on a chase involving both a motor vehicle and a foot pursuit.
Oney Brown, 27, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Brewer following a pursuit that began with an attempted traffic stop Wednesday evening.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, Lt. Miron Southerland attempted a traffic stop on a pink Chevrolet Cavalier on U.S. 119 in Putney. The vehicle refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that continued for approximately 1 mile. At that point, the vehicle made an abrupt stop and Brown exited the vehicle.
The release states Southerland pursued Brown, and released K-9 Ice. Brown then pulled a knife on Ice in an attempt to physically harm the dog. Brown then ran into the woods. A manhunt involving several police agencies was initiated, during which time Brown made his way to a Chevrolet Cavalier belonging to Ashley Stewart and unlawfully fled the scene in the vehicle. The vehicle was located by the Cumberland Police Department in the Hiram community, at which time a felony stop was executed and Brown was taken into custody.
Brewer was assisted in the arrest by Southerland, Sheriff Marvin Lipfird and officers from Harlan City Police, Lynch and Cumberland police departments.
Brown was charged with second-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, second-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot), second-degree attempted assault on a service animal, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, possession of an open alcohol container in a motor vehicle, two counts of failure to appear, being a fugitive from another state and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Brown was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on bonds totalling $2,000 full cash.
