As regulars on the courthouse square, John Massingale, 80 of Harlan, and his buddy, Orville Shepherd, also 80 of Harlan, feel a duty to feed the birds every day on a stump in front of the Harlan County Courthouse. While placing bird seed, old cornbread and biscuit crumbs for the birds, they discovered the seed had sprouted in the old stump. They both said they were watching the plant every day to find out just what it might become.
