The Harlan Independent Board of Education discussed a single bid submitted for their elementary school project during a recent meeting. Weighing options, the board is now negotiating with the bidder on the project.
“The district received one bid for the elementary access project,” said Johnson. “That bid was submitted by Green Construction, of Middlesboro, in the amount of $299,900, which was higher than what was projected.”
Johnson said the main things for this project are the installation of new doors throughout the elementary school building and the construction of a handicap ramp at the front of the building. He said also included is a handicap lift in the main lobby of the building.
In other board action, valedictorian Samantha Henson and salutatorian Dylan McNeil were recognized and congratulated on their achievements for the 2012-2013 school year.
“It has been a custom over the years to do this recognition,” said Johnson. “This is something I’ve always been proud to do.”
Henson said she plans to continue her education at the University of Kentucky and ultimately become a pediatrician. She is the daughter of John Henson and Susie Gilliam, both of Harlan.
McNeil said he plans to also continue his education at the University of Kentucky and obtain a degree in mining engineering. He is the son of Tip and Jaimie McNeil, of Totz.
“After visiting the University of Kentucky and talking with the mining engineering department, I found there are so many opportunities in this field,” said McNeil.
Johnson went on to say both students had outstanding careers in athletics as well as academics. He said plaques will be presented to each student at a later date.
Other action taken included:
*Approval of substitute teachers for 2013-2014;
*Denial of a request from the Harlan City Police Department for use of the district’s baseball field for a two-day softball tournament. Will Miller was the sole board member asking for the request to be approved;
*Approved other items in the consent agenda.
